Impacted tooth 43

Tooth 43 is horizontally impacted in the anterior right mandible. The crown of tooth 43 is located immediately buccal to the root apex of tooth 41. The root apex of tooth 43 is located just apical to the root apex of tooth 44. There is no evidence of root resorption in teeth 41 and 44. The periodontal ligament space surrounding the root circumference of this impacted tooth is visualized, which suggests that it is not ankylosed. The follicle surrounding the crown of tooth 43 appears normal, and continuous with the follicle of the impacted tooth 33. The crown of tooth 43 can be surgically accessed from the buccal aspect of the alveolar process, just buccal to the root apex of tooth 41.

Normal tooth 44

Tooth 44 appears normal radiographically. There is no evidence of displacement or root resorption in association with its close proximity to the impacted tooth 43. The root apex of tooth 43 is located apical to the root apex of tooth 44.

Retained tooth 83

The deciduous tooth 83 is retained within the alveolar process of site 43, and exhibits moderate physiologic root resorption. The middle third of the root of tooth 43 is located apical to the residual root apex of tooth 83.

Normal tooth 42

Tooth 42 appears normal radiographically. There is no evidence of displacement or root resorption in association with its close proximity to the impacted tooth 43. The coronal third of the root of tooth 43 is located apical and buccal to the root apex of tooth 42.

Normal tooth 41

Tooth 41 appears normal radiographically. There is no evidence of displacement or root resorption in association with its close proximity to the impacted tooth 43. The crown of tooth 43 is located immediately buccal to the root apex of tooth 41.

Impacted tooth 33

Tooth 33 is horizontally impacted in the anterior left mandible. The crown of tooth 33 is located just inferior to the crown of tooth 43. The root apex of tooth 33 is located mesial to the root apex of tooth 34. The periodontal ligament space surrounding the root circumference of this impacted tooth is visualized, which suggests that it is not ankylosed. The follicle surrounding the crown of tooth 33 appears normal, and continuous with the follicle of the impacted tooth 43. The crown of tooth 33 can be surgically accessed from the buccal aspect of the alveolar process, just inferior to the crown of tooth 43.

Normal tooth 31

Tooth 31 appears normal radiographically. There is no evidence of displacement or root resorption in association with its close proximity to the impacted tooth 33. The coronal third of the root of tooth 33 is located apical to the root apex of tooth 31.

Normal tooth 32

Tooth 32 appears normal radiographically. There is no evidence of displacement or root resorption in association with its close proximity to the impacted tooth 33. The middle third of the root of tooth 33 is located apical to the root apex of tooth 32.

Retained tooth 73

The deciduous tooth 73 is retained within the alveolar process of site 33, and exhibits moderate physiologic root resorption. The apical third of the root of tooth 33 is located apical to the residual root apex of tooth 73.

Axial views of the anterior mandible

These axial cross-sectional images demonstrate the buccal positioning of the crown of tooth 43 relative to the root apex of tooth 41, and the inferior positioning of the crown of tooth 33 relative to the crown of tooth 43. There is no evidence of root resorption in the mandibular incisors.
