Roots of tooth 28 displaced into infratemporal fossa
The roots of tooth 28 have been displaced posteriorly, laterally, and superiorly from its socket, and is positioned within the left infratemporal fossa posterior to the zygomatic process of the maxilla. The crown of this tooth is missing. The inferior aspect of the posterolateral wall of the left maxillary sinus is intact. There are multiple large air bubbles present in this area.
Axial views of posterior left maxilla
These axial cross-sectional images demonstrate the position of the roots of tooth 28 within the left infratemporal fossa posterior to the left zygomatic process. Note the posterolateral wall of the left maxillary sinus is intact. There are multiple air bubbles in the soft tissue surrounding this area.
Mesiodistal views of posterior left maxilla
These mesiodistal cross-sectional images demonstrate the presence of the extraction site of tooth 28.
Buccolingual views of posterior left maxilla
These buccolingual cross-sectional images demonstrate the superior and posterior displacement of the roots of tooth 28 into the left infratemporal fossa.
1. Recent extraction socket at site 28: Possible oral-antral communication
The extraction socket at site 28 is present and is filled with soft tissue and air bubbles. The contiguous floor of the sinus is thin. The maxillary sinus floor may be partially dehiscent on the buccal surface of the palatal root extraction site. The overlying mucosa of the maxillary sinus floor adjacent to this area appears to be slightly thickened. These radiographic findings are suggestive of a recent extraction site. The possibility of an oro-antral communication should be considered.
2. Mild mucositis of left maxillary sinus
The left maxillary sinus exhibits mild mucositis.
Periodontal bone loss
Mild horizontal periodontal bone loss is present on the left maxillary and mandibular teeth captured in this field of view.
3. Caries on tooth 25D
A portion of the crown of tooth 25 is captured in this field of view. Caries are present on the distal surface of this tooth.
4. Recent extraction socket at site 38
A recent extraction socket is present at site 38. There are multiple air bubbles present in the mucosa overlying the buccal cortical plate.
5. Dense bone island lingual to tooth 36
A dense bone island is present in the alveolar process, in the region lingual to tooth 36. This dense bone island is continuous with the lingual cortical plate, and has not had any effects on the surrounding structures. This is a non-significant incidental finding. No treatment is required.
