Vertically impacted tooth 24
Tooth 24 is vertically impacted at the distolingual surface of the root of tooth 23. This tooth has developed in this position because of the enlargement of the maxillary sinus all the way to the crest of the maxillary alveolar process in the premolar region. No bone is available in the premolar region.
Tooth 24 has not had any effect on the surrounding teeth. The root of the tooth is approximately 90% formed and the follicle surrounding the crown of the tooth appears normal. The crown can be accessed surgically from the palatal aspect of the maxillary alveolar process adjacent to tooth 23.
Normal tooth 22
Tooth 22 has not been affected by the impacted tooth 24.
Normal tooth 23
Tooth 23 has not been affected by the impacted tooth 24. Note the proximity of the maxillary sinus to the impacted tooth 24. The root orientation has been dictated by the proximity of the tooth to the anterior wall of the sinus.
1. Axial slices of tooth 24
These axial cross-sectional images demonstrate the palatal position of tooth 24 relative to tooth 23, as well as the enlargement of the maxillary sinus into the space normally occupied by tooth 24. Tooth 25 is absent.
