Malformed tooth 41: crown and root dilaceration

Tooth 41 has normally erupted, but the crown of the tooth is buccally dilacerated by 90 degrees at the cementoenamel junction. The root apex of this tooth appears also dilacerated i

1. Widened PDL space on tooth 41

There is a slight widening of the periodontal ligament space around the dilacerated root apex of tooth 41. These findings could suggest the presence of early pulpal inflammatory disease in tooth 41, and clinical vitality testing of this tooth is recommended. Tooth 41 demonstrates distinct buccal and lingual canals that converge within the apical third of its root.

Malformed tooth 31: crown and root dilaceration

Tooth 31 has normally erupted, but the crown of the tooth is buccally dilacerated by 90 degrees at the cementoenamel junction. The root of this tooth appears also dilacerated in a mesial direction.

2. Widened PDL space on tooth 31

There is a slight widening of the periodontal ligament space around the dilacerated root apex of tooth 31. These findings could suggest the presence of early pulpal inflammatory disease in tooth 31, and clinical vitality testing of this tooth is recommended. Tooth 31 demonstrates distinct buccal and lingual canals that converge within the middle third of its root.

Axial views of the anterior mandible

These axial cross-sectional images demonstrate the presence of normal buccal and lingual bone of the anterior mandible. Periapical periodontal ligament space widening is evident at teeth 31 and 41. The other periradicular bone surrounding the roots of the anterior teeth appear normal. These images also demonstrate that two canals are present in teeth 31 and 41. There is no radiographic evidence of root fracture at these teeth.

Mesiodistal views of the anterior mandible

These mesiodistal cross-sectional images demonstrate the normal bone at the mesial and distal root surfaces of teeth 31 and 41. The dilacerated root apices and widened periapical periodontal ligament are also evident.

Normal periodontal bone levels

The periodontal bone levels on the imaged dentition appear normal.
