1. Residual cyst and retained root at site 36

A well-defined unilocular radiolucent cystic entity with a corticated periphery is present in the alveolar process at site 36. A small amount of granular bone formation is visible at the periphery of this cystic lesion, which suggests that it has been partially or recently marsupialized. A small defect is present at the alveolar crest at the mesial aspect of site 36, which communicates with the cystic lesion and may represent the drainage site. The endodontically treated mesial root of tooth 36 is retained, and is associated with this cystic lesion. The inferior border of the cystic lesion is positioned at the superior border of the inferior alveolar nerve canal. The cortical boundaries of the cyst and canal remain intact in this region. The overall radiographic appearance is suggestive of a draining residual cyst associated with a retained root.
