1. Rarefying osteitis on tooth 31

A broad zone of periapical rarefying osteitis involves tooth 31. The overlying buccal cortical plate is dehiscent, extending between the periapical areas of teeth 41 and 32. No radiographic evidence of post-treatment healing is present at this time. Due to the slightly unusual pattern of bone loss associated with tooth 31, a biopsy of the overlying soft tissue may be considered to confirm an inflammatory etiology of the lesion. Also note that due to slight over-exposure during acquisition of this imaging volume, the extent of buccal bone loss may be somewhat exaggerated.

Axial views of anterior mandible

These axial cross-sectional images demonstrate loss of the buccal cortical plate adjacent to the area of rarefying osteitis involving tooth 31. This area of bone loss extends to abut the distobuccal surface of tooth 32.

Mesiodistal views of anterior mandible

These mesiodistal cross-sectional images demonstrate the epicenter of bone loss associated with the periapical region of tooth 31.

Buccolingual views of anterior mandible

These buccolingual cross-sectional images demonstrate the extension of the area of rarefying osteitis involving tooth 31 along the buccal surface of the mandible, to the distobuccal aspect of tooth 32. Due to the slightly atypical pattern of bone loss, a biopsy of the overlying soft tissues may be considered to confirm the interpretation of rarefying osteitis.
